Parenting “Welcome to Holland”
Overwhelmed and stuck with the struggle of moving forward. Not happy that you don't have the answers and your nearest and dearest "advice" is not helping either.
The counselling approach is to support you discover “who am I?” through understanding your past.
The lens of the masters began with Freud and his discovery of subconscious drives and defence mechanisms. As a healer of those who have suffered trauma, addictions and present disasters, I believe the key to the answers you seek lies in a “person-centred” Rogerian concept. The individual sits central to the matrix of their life, often knowingly overwhelmed by the present challenges it brings. However, through the process of self-discovery with the help of our forebearers in psychology, we can again love ourselves, love others and find meaning and purpose in the life we are living.
History has also given rise to many tools of trade to explain the cause and effect of our environment. “Reinforcement” creating “conditioned responses” often draws the well-known theorist Pavlov and his salivating dogs. In exploration of our life, we begin to make sense of the “think patterns” introduced by Ellis. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is an approach to define emotional responses, such as catastrophizing, just world fallacy, hindsight vision and my personal favourite “should...” CBT is the retraining of autonomic subconscious drives and defence mechanisms which have become our personal limitations.
The core of counselling is to offer therapeutic techniques and knowledge to empower you with the clarity to make informed choice and discover the boundaries holding you back.
Scope
Counselling therapy has a focus on the understanding of challenges, personal growth and navigating your narrative. As a Registered Nurse I am knowledgeable on mental health, medications and the promotion of healthy diet and lifestyle choices. Confidentiality and privacy of records governs my practice, as does seeking crisis support/escalation of care should circumstance require advanced management.
The cheeky thing about therapists is their personal journey of painful experiences leading to an empathic mind and desire to study psychological techniques to help others.
My personal journey afforded me the ability to question multiple therapists who directed me from their hot seat of failure or limited life experience.
Therapists who had never had a long successful relationship thus unable to stretch their mind around complexity not requiring separation.
None understood the joy to be found in unusual family dynamics.
I believe with addictions you should try out a few, and give them up before you choose to proffer support. I am proud to have managed a successful weight loss of 30 kgs related to mostly emotional eating.
The advice I have seen given to small business owners has left me aghast in this sphere where knowledge of psychological hardship needs to be paired with savvy business acumen.
My most recent issue was the horror of a career switch gone terribly wrong. The journey with this one deepened my understanding of finding ways to process the narrative. Change the narrative and refuse to let the past intrude on my present.
I went for help and suffered embarrassment for my “delightful” past experiences and pity for my overwhelm. The probable foundation of the newer scope of practice is of the “lived experience” practitioner or “liaison” presently seen as advisors to clinicians in the healthcare sector.
I found my niche in the counselling style of therapy within the liaison role in combination with approaches discovered by the forebears of psychology. Psychological theory that has stood the test of both time and evidence based quantitative research to have positive effect. I believe that good therapy is life changing and as an empath I thrive personally on helping others succeed.
